It is now the middle of January. From where I sit, it’s cold, snowy and somewhat dreary. Time to get started on that resolution you made for the new year!

Except I don’t really make “resolutions” each new year.

Why? Because it sets you up for failure.

Oh, I know. Some of you are going to hit the gym and sculpt a new body. Some of you are going to learn a new language. Some are thinking about going back to school.

It’s good to have goals. It gives you something to strive for. But, let’s be realistic. Life very often gets in the way of those resolutions we decided upon the first of the year.

Some of you will stick to it and complete the goals you resolved to do in the new year, but most will slack off gradually and forget about them by the end of January. (You have noticed that your gym is packed the first few days of January and by February it’s back to normal)

So, I don’t make resolutions. A long time ago I made one that I try to stick to all year long. That resolution, that goal, is to do the best I can every single day.

Every day’s goals are different. Every day’s challenges are different than the day before. Similar, but rarely identical.

If you can honestly say that you did your best, no matter the outcome, it has been a successful day. Then you can strive to correct whatever mistakes you may have made, or what unintended consequences occurred.

Every mistake is a lesson learned. Those who never erred, never tried and never learned.
