A Man’s Gotta Eat
Of course, women also eat. Teenagers definitely must eat. Children eat – even the picky eaters eventually eat something. If you want to live, eating is essential!
When it comes to eating, people have choices. Lots of them.
In the U.S., there are more than one million restaurants. And, their annual sales total nearly $800 Billion!
Did you know that in the last 63 years the restaurant industry’s share of the family food dollar has risen from 25 to 48%? Forget about all those memories of drive-ins back in the 50’s. People are visiting restaurants today more than ever!
Another interesting tidbit. Over half of restaurant diners eat out more than once a week. I have a sister who eats virtually all her meals in restaurants. Sit down restaurants. Not fast food restaurants. I don’t even know why she has a stove.
So, what does it mean to a restaurant owner?
It means that, on average, if you’re not attracting enough customers and pulling down your fair market share, you’re missing out. It also means that if you’re running a small business and, let’s face it, most restaurants qualify as a small business, you may have noticed that the way we shop has fundamentally changed in the past several years. We’re now using our mobile devices to research, especially when we’re looking for a place to eat.
According to a survey conducted by research firm Chadwick Martin Bailey, “81% of consumers have searched for a restaurant on a mobile device or app.” The study, compiled through the feedback from 1,497 consumers who own a smartphone, found that searches for restaurants outperformed other highly searched industries, such as entertainment, retail outlets, hotels, and personal services.”
The impact of searching online for a restaurant to dine at goes even further.
- 80% of consumers think it’s important to see a menu before they dine at a restaurant.
- 70% of consumers think it is important to be able to read the menu of a restaurant on a mobile device.
- And 62% of consumers are less likely to choose a restaurant if they can’t read the menu on their mobile device.
Furthermore, when a company’s online listings are complete with hours, reviews, ratings, photos and important information like menus or product lists, consumers are nearly 200% more likely to view that business as a place to depend on.
That’s a statistic that’s hard to ignore!
